Sidhe Moons

Honoring the Mysteries of the Otherworld

A Sidhe Moon is one of the more unique observances within the Wiccan Family Temple tradition.

While every New Moon marks the beginning of a new lunar cycle, there are rare occasions when two New Moons occur within the same solar month. Within our tradition, the second of these New Moons is known as the Sidhe Moon.

Because it occurs only occasionally, the Sidhe Moon is regarded as a special time for quiet reflection, spiritual awareness, and honoring the mysteries that lie just beyond ordinary experience.

The Meaning of “Sidhe”

The word Sidhe (pronounced Shee) comes from Irish tradition and refers to the People of the Mounds, sometimes described as the Fair Folk, the Fae, or the People of the Otherworld.

In Celtic tradition, the Sidhe are closely connected with the natural world, the ancient landscapes of Ireland, and the unseen realms that exist alongside our own. They are treated with respect, courtesy, and humility.

Within the Wiccan Family Temple, the Sidhe Moon offers an opportunity to acknowledge these ancient traditions while reflecting upon the mysteries of Nature and the unseen dimensions of existence.

A Time Between Worlds

Just as Samhain is associated with a thinning of the veil between worlds, the Sidhe Moon reminds us that there are moments when we are invited to become more attentive to the subtle and mysterious aspects of life.

This is not a time to seek certainty.

It is a time to cultivate wonder.

The Sidhe Moon encourages stillness, careful listening, deep meditation, and openness to insight. It reminds us that not every truth is immediately visible and that wisdom often comes quietly.

Honoring the Unseen

Many traditions have long regarded the Sidhe Moon as an appropriate time to acknowledge the unseen beings and spiritual forces that share the natural world.

Some practitioners choose to leave simple offerings of gratitude, such as fresh water, milk, honey, bread, or seasonal foods, as symbolic acts of respect for the living world and its many mysteries.

These offerings are not made out of fear or obligation, but as expressions of hospitality, reverence, and gratitude.

As with all aspects of Wicca, practices vary among traditions, and each individual is encouraged to approach these customs thoughtfully and respectfully.

Reflection and Renewal

Because the Sidhe Moon occurs during the dark phase of the lunar cycle, it is also associated with release, healing, and making space for new growth.

Many practitioners use this time for:

  • Quiet meditation

  • Deep personal reflection

  • Healing work

  • Releasing old habits

  • Spiritual cleansing

  • Listening for intuition

  • Honoring Nature’s unseen mysteries

Rather than focusing on outward activity, the Sidhe Moon invites us inward.

Sometimes our greatest growth begins in silence.

Celebrating the Sidhe Moon

At the Wiccan Family Temple, the Sidhe Moon is observed as a peaceful and contemplative gathering.

Through meditation, ritual, prayer, and fellowship, we honor the mysteries of Nature, the wisdom of the unseen, and the continual cycles of transformation that shape both the world around us and our own spiritual lives.

It is a gentle reminder that mystery is not something to solve—it is something to experience with reverence and curiosity.
