Litha
The Summer Solstice and the Fullness of the Sun
Around June 20–21
The Sun stands at its highest point in the sky.
The Earth is vibrant with life. Gardens are flourishing, forests are full, and the warmth of summer surrounds us. Light stretches long into the evening, inviting us outdoors to celebrate the beauty and abundance of the natural world.
Litha, the Summer Solstice, is the celebration of life at its fullest expression. It is a time to recognize the blessings that surround us, to rejoice in the gifts of Nature, and to appreciate the light that nourishes all living things.
As the Wheel reaches its brightest moment, we are reminded to live fully, love generously, and give thanks for the abundance of the season.
The Summer Solstice
Litha marks the longest day and shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
For countless generations, people have gathered at this sacred turning point to honor the life-giving power of the Sun. Ancient monuments throughout the world were carefully aligned with the rising or setting Sun on the Solstice, reflecting humanity’s deep connection with the rhythms of the natural world.
Although the days begin to shorten after the Solstice, this is not viewed as an ending. Instead, it reminds us that every season naturally gives way to the next, and that change itself is part of the sacred rhythm of life.
Living in Abundance
Litha is a celebration of abundance in every sense.
The Earth has reached its fullest expression of growth. Fields are green, flowers bloom in brilliant color, and the first fruits of the season begin to appear.
This abundance also invites us to reflect upon our own lives.
What blessings have we cultivated?
What relationships have flourished?
How have we grown since the Wheel began its turn at Samhain?
Litha encourages us to pause and appreciate what has already been accomplished before we begin preparing for the harvests yet to come.
Honoring the Light
Throughout many Pagan traditions, Litha celebrates the life-giving energy of the Sun and the sacred partnership between the Earth and the heavens.
Bonfires have long been lit to honor the Sun’s strength and to celebrate the warmth, vitality, and creative energy that sustain all living things.
Fire at Litha represents illumination, courage, joy, inspiration, and the enduring light that exists within each of us.
As daylight fills the world, we are reminded to let our own gifts shine with generosity and compassion.
Celebrating Litha
At the Wiccan Family Temple, Litha is a joyful celebration of Nature’s abundance and the fullness of life.
Through ritual, fellowship, music, feasting, and time spent outdoors, we give thanks for the blessings of the season and recognize our responsibility to care for the Earth that sustains us.
The Summer Solstice reminds us that every gift carries with it a responsibility to share that abundance with others.
