Beltane is the festival of life in its fullest expression. It is a celebration of vitality, creativity, joy, love, and the limitless energy of the living Earth.

As the Wheel turns toward summer, we pause to celebrate not only the fertility of the land, but also the flourishing of our communities, our relationships, our dreams, and our spirits.

A Festival of Fire

Beltane is one of the four Greater Sabbats and has long been celebrated as one of the principal festivals of the Pagan year.

Its name is commonly understood to mean “Bel’s Fire,” recalling the ancient custom of lighting sacred bonfires to bless the land, livestock, and community. Fire has long symbolized life, transformation, purification, and creative energy.

Historically, people gathered around Beltane fires to celebrate the return of warmth, the promise of a successful growing season, and the abundance that Nature provides.

Today, fire continues to symbolize inspiration, renewal, and the sacred spark of life within every living being.

The word fertility often brings to mind new life, but Beltane celebrates something much broader.

At Beltane, we celebrate the extraordinary creative force that moves through Nature and through ourselves.

Many traditions honor the sacred union of the Goddess and the God as a symbol of the harmony between the feminine and masculine forces of creation. Whether understood literally or symbolically, this sacred union reminds us that life is continually renewed through balance, partnership, and the creative power of Nature.

Celebrating Beltane

At the Wiccan Family Temple, Beltane is one of our most joyful celebrations.

Music, laughter, dancing, feasting, flowers, and community come together to honor the abundance of the season. The Maypole remains one of the best-known symbols of Beltane, representing the joyful weaving together of community and the interconnectedness of all life.

Bonfires, flower crowns, ribbons, and fresh blossoms celebrate the beauty of the natural world and remind us to greet life with gratitude and wonder.
